ok revision on arab-israeli.
the conflict started off as a civil war between the zionists and palestinians. after the partition, the arabs involved themselves in their bid to lead the region and used pakistan as a rhetorical tool. the conflict then evolved into the nature of inter-state. soon after, cold war policies intruded into the politics of the conflict, and even the arabs were divided by the different sponsorship of us and ussr. us had egypt, saudi and jordan under its belt while ussr had iraq, south yemen and syria.
of course, this conflict wouldn't be the most complicated conflict ever if it were just these issues. the heavyhanded ruling by israeli towards the palestinian refugees suffered a backlash in 1987 when the syzygy of injustice, poverty, economic hardship and years of being marginalized materialized into a spontaneous and passionate uprising, also known as the intifada. the intifada also transformed islamic activism, which used to focus on communal activities, with popular fundamentalist groups such as hamas and islamic jihad being formed. the emergence of these islamic fundamentalists complicated the issue as it fuelled israel security fears and thus made it harder to resolve the conflict.
this led the israelis to realise that the core of the conflict lies with the palestinian, and to ever unravel this already complicated knot, they have to deal directly with the palestinians and not their supposed allies, the arabs. the oslo accords were founded in 1992-3, and it was a watershed move towards harmony between the two sides. however, the agreement to handover parts of west bank and gaza strip to palestinians to form their sovereign state did not go down well with hardcore right-winegrs pro-settlers as they had already acclimatized to life in their jewish settlement and were displeased by the need to move. they argued that the number of settlements to be returned should be given at a slower rate and in reduced numbers. as their wishes were not complied, terrorist attacks soon surfaced, with examples being the 1994 hebron massacre and 1995 assassination of labour party pm rabin. the assassination allowed the hardline party, likud, to succeed and led to greater difficulty in resolving the conflict as likud was known for its anti-peace stance.
haha ok time to go to the next topic. if only history were all about describing... that would have been too easy ><
