I stumbled upon this correlation while studying Economics during CTs, and it only resurfaced recently. A country having a Balance of Payments surplus will mean that somewhere out there, another country is having a BOP deficit. A surplus must be accompanied by a deficit to ensure equilibrium.
There are so many things in life that function in this seemingly yin-yang relationship. And from this truism of life stems many problems that contemporary society is familiar with i.e. rich vs poor resulting in widening income inequality, developed countries vs less developed countries resulting in the North-South divide, etc... Seems paradoxical and ironic that equilibrium, also known as the balance of equations, is the source of disequilibrium and imbalance.
Looking away from the macro scale of things, we delve into the micro issues that is characteristic of daily interactions. If the above relation is intrinsic of life, a law or rule that governs us in a way, can acceptance of A be seen as a rejection of B? Does loving C necessarily mean hating D? Is befriending E an act of ostracizing F? Things aren't always so clear cut. We have to learn to differentiate the gray from the black and the white, and not subscribe to dichotomies that polarize viewpoints into two disparate and contradicting zones. Acceptance does not necessarily come at the expense of rejection, the opposite of love is sometimes known as indifference, and friendships do not act with the forward bias of a diode, which is inflexibly unilateral.
While it is definitely convenient and simple to believe in duality, what is simple may not be right, just as haste does not equate to speed. Perfect may not be the most desirable, just as fun may not always be positive. Hence, think in shades of grey, and only then will you appreciate the depths of black and the vastness of white better.
