challenges of the 21st century

A question by Lizzy on the impact of ageing population inspired this post (:

If you haven't realized, our world is in trouble. No, this is not an alarmist message projected to exploit the media of sensationalizing. One simply has to take a look at weekly headlines on the newspapers to find out the extent of suffering and chaos present in our world right now, a product of both human and non-human factors.

The upcoming challenges to our world are:
1. Global Climate Concerns (Global warming, rising sea levels)
2. Rising Frequency of Natural Disasters (Hurricane Ike, earthquakes in China and Myammar)
2. Nuclear Proliferation (India, Iraq, Iran, Russia, China, North Korea)
3. Conflict and Chaos (Iraq war, Arab-Israeli Conflict, Indo-Pakistan Conflict, Russia's belligerence)
4. Ageing Population (developed countries and even developing ones; Singapore, Japan, Europe)
5. Terrorism (Islamic fundamentalism, Al-Qaeda global jihad)

Yet, global concerted efforts to limit or resolve these challenges have yet materialized significantly. National interests precede global concerns.

Oh well. As for now, let's just overhaul the As, and perhaps in the near future, we can be the ones to bring about the changes needed to save the world.
