A path to walk

We are creatures of routine. At least, most of us are. Binded to the paths that are well-worn through countless trekking, we follow the familiar and avoid the alien. There is comfort in experience, safety in the known, and assurance in the status quo.

There are, then, occasions where our blood calls for adventure and seeks out the novel, triggered by something we often know little of. Thus, we mine the depths of our soul for a little of that which colours these orbs in radiant amber, and use it to pound a saltatory rhythm on these steady drums. Prepared, assured and confident, we approach the misty paths with the cloak on which our hearts are sewn, thinking ourselves insulated from the cold, biting winds of doubt, insecurity and fear that stand in the way of our dreams, ideals and fantasies.

Yet, even before these boots land on the untested route, we start to hesitate as we watch a streak of lightning flash before us, illuminating the darkness that lies ahead and allowing us to catch a glimpse of the unknown landscape. For that brief moment, the vibrant amber that colours our perspective is enveloped by a sheet of white, and the discontinuous drumbeat is swallowed by the rumble of foreign clouds above.

We lower ourselves to the ground and tuck our knees in front of our arms, thinking, pondering and wondering. Is this uncertainty but a veneer for the underlying cowardice? On the other hand, is courage a sign of certainty? Like the paths we have trodden before, this is our walk to walk, an independent journey of self-discovery and understanding. After all, in every uncertainty lies a lesson to be learnt, and, in every lesson, there lies an opportunity for us to grow.
