Knowing is not enough, you must apply. We frequently make promises to ourselves, resolutions saturated with moving determination and driven by a fiery spirit that made us believe we will never go back on them. Christmas, New Year or perhaps a radical experience - these occasions provide us with the need and drive to make a promise of change, a nudge to wake us from a troubled and restless slumber. But often than not, the peaked emotions and unparalleled sentiments, being transient in nature, get buried inch by inch by the monotony of our daily lives, never to be felt again. As such, caught in flux of change, we are awashed with newer feelings and gradually forget about the old, and unable to reproduce the feelings of the past, our promises evanescent along with the unforgiving rapids of time.
Willing is not enough, you must do.
Having the determination to carry out something is inadequate - we have to bring ourselves to actually do it. However, we have to admit that we are creatures of habit, a learnt behaviour nurtured in us through the learnt experiences of our predecessors, and as such, we are naturally drawn towards the familiar, actions repeated frequently, periodically. As these habits become more entrenched in our lives, we experience a greater force of inertia when the desire to change is born.
it is easy to make a resolution, but it is never easy to follow it through. We recognise the need for change, but recognition is not sufficient. A greater impetus to overcome the inertia is needed. But where can we find such a push strong enough, when even valuable memories and intangible bonds could fail to drive us forward? Where can we even begin seeking for it?
